I’m a big fan of JA Jance, particularly her Joanna Brady and JP Beaumont series. For some reason, I’m not as familiar with her Ali Reynolds series. I will need to remedy that after reading Left for Dead.
Ali Reynolds flies into action when her friend deputy sheriff Jose Reyes is shot while on duty. His young wife is pregnant with her third child, and there’s no one on hand to help out. At the same time, her dear friend Sister Anselm (a nun!) is called to the same medical center to be a patient advocate for a young girl who had been tortured and left for dead in the desert. Things get more complicated when Jose and his young wife are accused of being involved in the local drug trade and Sister Anselm identifies her young charge as a runaway whose family has been looking for her for over three years. Together the two women rely on each other to keep their friends and loved ones safe.
JA Jance shares a tale through her writing like a good friend tells you a story in your living room. I can see the coffee cups or wine glasses resting nearby as she keeps you entraced with a story about people she knows. The pacing is even-keeled and without unnecessary drama. Her women characters are strong and capable.
My only thought when I finished reading this book and discovered the villain, was that that was a story I wanted to hear about! How it came about. How things were carried out. It could be a book on its own! It’s amazing how Jance takes the pieces and weaves them together into a neat story at the end.
As soon as I find some open reading time, I’m going to read the Ali Reynolds series from the start. I think this is one lady I need to know.
